Continued confrontation between Israelis and Palestinians
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 8/4/2001

Amid the tough military siege, the Israeli occupation forces continued its systematic attacks especially in the cities of Hebron and Jerusalem.

The Israeli tanks bombarded al-Khalil city and al-Ourah quarters and this resulted in destroying several houses and a headquarters for "force no 17" of the Palestinian Authority security.

The Palestinians held large demonstrations in retaliation of the Israeli aggressions. Very soon the demonstrations were changed into real confrontation with the Israeli forces and several Palestinian youths were wounded and two Israeli soldiers were also hit.

In Jerusalem, the Israeli forces ordered the demolishing of more Palestinian houses after the three houses demolished in the two past days, and these forces also prevented thousands of Palestinians from heading to al-Aqsa mosque to perform Friday's prayers and as a result strong clashes took place in which the Palestinians used glass bottles and stones in confrontation of the bullets and tear bombs. The casualties were not known because of the strong military siege and the Israeli forces prevented journalists from reaching Jerusalem since early Friday morning.

News reports said that despite the tough Israeli measures, thousands of Palestinians could reach the al-Aqsa mosque, defying the military siege and barriers.

A large funeral was held in Nablus for the Palestinian Firas Abdul Haq ( 23 years old) who was killed by the Israeli bullets and the participants in the funeral vowed to revenge the killed Palestinians whose brother Humam was killed two months earlier at ( 19 year old of age).

The Palestinian resistance group announced they killed one Palestinian hireling in Bethlehem while the Palestinian Authority arrested 60 persons suspected to be collaborators with the Israeli forces in Jenin and the neighboring area amid news about a possible Israeli attack against the city with the arrangement of these collaborators.

Meantime, Palestinian officials strongly criticized the American administration, stressing that its non- interference to pressure Israel encourages the Israeli army to proceed with the policy of killing and assassination against the Palestinians.

The Palestinian self rule official Saeb Oreikat said that the government of Sharon takes the American position as a green light to continue its policy describing the situation as very grave.
