France reminds of the need to deploy the Lebanese army
Lebanon-France, Politics, 8/4/2001

In the course of the reaction to the decision of the UN Security Council towards Lebanon, France has expressed its satisfaction over the UN decision and reminded of the need to deploy the Lebanese army in South Lebanon.

The assistant for the spokesman of the French foreign ministry Bernard Valerou said: " as the UN secretary general has referred to in his report, the Lebanese authority spread of its full sovereignty in the southern part of its territories, including the Lebanese army, is necessary." He added that the " UN Security Council has taken a decision to which we had contributed effectively that will extend the mission of UNIFIL in south Lebanon for 6 years. And we are pleased for the adoption of this decision."

He added that France considers the UN, by adopting this decision " has taken into consideration Lebanon's legitimate fears," together with preserving its " commitment beside Lebanon and to " amend the role of the UN troopers to the missions they actually carry out."
