UN Security Council extends for UNIFIL
Lebanon, Politics, 8/2/2001

The UN Security Council has unanimously on Tuesday renewed the mission of UNIFIL ( UN forces working in Lebanon) for 6 more months without making a change in the mission of these forces. But the UN assigned the UN secretary general kofi Annan to prepare a detailed report after making consultations with the Lebanese government on " a possible defining of these forces as an observatory mission."

The new UN Security Council decision noted approval of the UN secretary general to reduce the number of these forces to 4500 members as from the beginning of August this year and then to 3600 next Autumn and to almost 2002 members in July of 2002.

The UN Security Council asked Annan to continue taking necessary measures to draw a new perspective for the work of UNIFIL and to re-deploy these forces according to his report.

The UN Security Council also called on the Lebanese government to take more measures in order to maintain its real sovereignty on all parts of South Lebanon, especially through the deployment of the Lebanese armed forces," calling on all sides to precisely honor the withdrawal line drawn by the UN." This is, however, the first time since the foundation of this force, in which the UN Security Council indicates in an official decision to the possibility of changing the task of this force, but it links that to making consultation with the Lebanese government which categorically refuse the change in the task of the mission.
