On relations between Syria and Turkey
Syria-Turkey, Politics, 8/2/2001
The Turkish daily Joumhoreyat said on Wednesday that the current visit made by the Syrian deputy foreign minister Mrs. Siba Nasser to Ankara will pave the way for the visit of the Turkish foreign minister Ismael Cim to Damascus and the visit of the " young" Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to Ankara.
The paper indicated that among the most important issues to be discussed in the agenda of the Syrian- Turkish joint talks will deal with preparing a work plan to define basics which will be stated in the declaration of principles as well as other issues including strengthening dialogue already started between the military men of the two countries to totally overcome the terrorist operation ( of the Kurdish Workers party) and increasing exchanged visits in all fields.
The paper added that it is expected that Mrs Naser will divert the attention of Turkey to Syria's suffering because of the " border crossing water." The paper concluded as saying that due to the concern the Arab countries has because of the successive visits made by the Israeli officials to Turkey, it will not be wrong " if we say" that the Turkish ambassador Igore Zeyal, who is the assistant for the consultant of the Turkish foreign ministry will assure the Syrian diplomat Siba Nasser that " Turkey does not adopt Israel."
