Algeria starts to erase traces of armed groups violence
Algeria, Politics, 7/31/2001

The Algerian government ha started eradication of social consequences inflicted by nine years of confrontation between the security forces and the armed groups, resulted in killing more 100,000 persons and material losses estimated at USD 2 billion..

The attempt of the Algerian government to this effect is based on two operations: rebuilding greater institutions destroyed by terrorism and re-settling almost 51,000 families who escaped from their original houses because of the deterioration of security conditions.

The Algerian prime minister Ali Bin Flis visited al-Jafla city and said:" I am carrying a message of hope. And a promise to work for solving problems of the area, demanding that the government will be fully supported in fighting terrorism which will be ultimately eliminated.

The visit of Bin Flis to Jafla was a signal to implement an economic revival program for the sake of which the government allotted a sum of 25 billion Algerian dinars ( USD 8 million). The program includes renovation of firms damaged from terrorism and financing new projects to revive the cycle of the economy.

The Algerian authorities also started efforts to solve what is called the " belts of poverty." They are very poorly made houses that the government names " transit crossing centers" built in the outskirts of the capital Algiers in recent years.

Algerian official sources said that half millions Algerians evacuated since 1993 from remote areas to the capital and the greater cities, fleeing threats made by the armed groups. Most of the evacuees settled in temporary very poor houses.
