Mubarak calls for implementing Mitchell committee recommendations

Egyptian Presdient Hosni Mubarak's talks with German foreign minister tackle ways of carrying out call by industrialized nations summit for deploying international observers between Palestinian and Israel.

President Mubarak has called for an immediate collective international move for halting deterioration in the Middle East through carrying out Mitchell committee recommendations as one package under the supervision of a neutral international observation mechanism. this came during the meeting held by the President yesterday with German foreign minister Joschka Fischer at the German city of Baden.

Talks between the President and the German foreign minister covered an assessment of the current situation between Israel and Palestinians in the light of a resolution by industrialized nations summit in Italy calling for setting up an international observation force for supervising Mitchell committee recommendations.

Mubarak and Fischer reviewed further reviewed international moves urgently needed and the role of the United States and Germany as well as other parties concerned at the international and regional levels.

Osama al-Baz, the Political Advisor to the President told al-Ahram that the president underlined the importance of taking Mitchell committee recommendations as a whole package, adding cease-fire agreement should be followed by confidence-building measures such as freezing all settlement activities and moving towards the final status negotiations as this is the only way which could lead to establishing peace and give hope for Palestinians and Israelis to establish peace at the end, provided that both sides should not embark on desperate actions that could bring about further setbacks to the peace process.

Baz said President Mubarak was keen to emphasize that application of Mitchell recommendations should take the shape of steps which are connected to each other.

The German foreign minister described his talks with president Mubarak as having been extremely fruitful and good adding they have tackled the situation in the Middle East, ways of reactivating the peace process and the steps which should be taken in this regard mainly cease-fire and implementing Mitchell committee recommendations.

Mubarak's talks with the German foreign minister, who is acting on behalf of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder who is currently on annual vacation, were attended on the Egyptian side by Osama al-Baz, the Political Advisor to the President, Egypt's Ambassador to Germany Mahmoud Mubarak and on the German side by the assistant German foreign minister for the Middle East affairs and the Director of the German foreign ministry.
