Spain, Morocco agree to regulate flow of Moroccan workers
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 7/26/2001
Morocco and Spain agreed in Madrid on Wednesday to regulate the flow of Moroccan workers, in a bid to reduce illegal immigration and fight the exploitation of workers.
The agreement, initialed by Morocco's minister of employment, vocational training, social development and solidarity, Abbas El Fassi, and Spain's deputy-premier and interior minister, Mariano Rajoy, stipulates that Spain would supply Morocco with information on the number of workers needed, the sought profiles and the job location.
These legal migrants will be given legal jobs, their rights will be protected and their dignity preserved. Media sources say between 12,000 and 20,000 workers will be allowed annually in Spain.
A commission will select candidates who will be delivered legal stay documents and work contracts in Spain.
The Moroccan community, with 125,000 registered workers, is the largest foreign community settled in Spain.
The accord, similar to the ones signed by Spain with Ecuador and Columbia, is conform to the cooperation and friendship links between the two countries, Spanish official sources said. It guarantees social and professional rights and legal stay conditions to Moroccan workers.
