Moroccan child-related laws to be adapted to international conventions
Morocco, Culture, 7/26/2001
An inter-ministerial commission dealing with childhood held a meeting in Rabat Tuesday to discuss child-related draft texts meant to adapt Moroccan laws to international conventions.
The meeting heard presentations by minister in charge of women condition, family and childhood protection and integration of disabled persons, Nouzha Chekrouni, and by minister of justice, Omar Azziman, on these draft texts.
Some of the texts deal with abandoned children and amendments to the law on nationality to enable a Moroccan woman give her citizenship to her children born from a marriage with a non-Moroccan.
The meeting also discussed procedures being examined by Morocco to adopt the protocol of the convention on children's rights related to children's participation in armed conflicts and their exploitation for sexual ends.
The meeting looked into preparations for the UN extraordinary session on childhood and into the Moroccan national plan of action meant to promote children's rights.
