AL chief in a Maghreb tour
Maghreb, Politics, 7/26/2001
The secretary general of the Arab League (AL) Amre Mousa started on Tuesday a visit to the Arab Maghreb federation.
A statement by the AL said that Mousa will hold talks with the leaders and officials in these countries centering on the project of the AL chief and his plan to develop the AL and to restructuring it so as to enjoy its remarkable position as a regional organization representing the regional Arab system.
The statement added that the AL chief will start his Maghreb tour by visiting Morocco and then Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania and Libya.
The statement added that Mousa's talks will also deal with developments of the current Arab conditions especially in light of the Israeli military escalation against the Palestinian people.
Worthy mentioning that Mousa's visit to Mauritania is considered the first during the last ten years. Mousa's visit is of special importance following the visit of Mauritania's foreign minister to Israel. That visit raised strong Arab criticism and even from Mousa himself at that time.
