Khaddam: an aggression against Syria will lead to the explosion in the region

Iranian President Muhammad Khatami on Tuesday evening in Tehran received Syria's vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam.

Present at the meeting were the first deputy for the Iranian President Hassan Habibi, the Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs Muhammad Sader, Syria's ambassador to Iran Turkey Saqer and the Iranian ambassador in Damascus.

Khaddam handed Khatami a message from President Bashar al-Assad on conditions in the region and their developments under the Israeli escalation against the Palestinians and the threats launched by the Israeli leaders against the countries of the region.

During the meeting, President Khatami commended Syria's stances under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad in defending the rights and causes of Arabs and Muslims especially the question of Palestine, noting that the situation in the Palestinian territories of great concern due to the Israeli aggressive policy and the acts of killing committed by the Israeli forces against the Palestinian people.

President Khatami said that Israel and those who support it are in a difficult position as a result of the brutal practices conducted by Sharon. He explained that Israel faces crises because of the continued Palestinian Intifada.

He stressed his country's stand in support of Syria and her militant stances in confrontation of the " expansionist Zionist schemes."

For his part, Khaddam stressed Syria's commitment to the national policy in defense of the interests of the Arabs and Muslims and the cause of the Palestinian people.

Khaddam noted the policy pursued by Sharon's government against the countries of the region, stressing that any aggression against Syria will lead to the explosion of conditions in the region and will inflict great damages to the aggressors.

Meantime, Khaddam and Habibi held an official round of talks on Tuesday dealt with the tense conditions in the region amid the escalation of the acts of violence and killing carried out by the Israelis against the Palestinians.

The two sides reviewed various regional and international issues of joint interests and view points were identical regarding debated issues.

Talks also dealt with bilateral relations and means of strengthening them in various areas and opening new prospects for these relations in the service of the interests of the two peoples.
