Al-Hariri confers with Solana
Lebanon-European Union, Politics, 7/25/2001
Lebanese prime minister Rafik al- Hariri has urged the international community to return back to deal comprehensively with the peace process in the region and to give up the policy of dismembering tracks or dealing with them separately.
During his meeting on Tuesday morning with the higher representative of the EU for the foreign policy and security Javier Solana, in the presence of the Lebanese foreign minister Mahmoud Hamoud and the EU ME peace process coordinator, al-Hariri said that subjugating to Israel's demand to halting the Intifada before returning back to the political operation, not to accept UN observers place the ME peace operation into a deadlock.
The Lebanese prime minister indicated that so far ten years of international, European and American mediations has not yet resulted into actual peace results in the region because these initiatives did not come out by a serious solution to detailed and comprehensive solution based on international legitimacy resolutions and international legitimacy.
Al-Hariri called for the accelerating the signing of the partnership agreement between Lebanon and the European Union saying that the agreement has now become in the hands of the EU as Lebanon has still certain trade demands waiting to be approved especially in the agricultural field.
For his part, Solana described his visit to Lebanon as fruitful. He said that he leaves Lebanon with the impression that relations between Lebanon and Europe will move towards the right direction.
He explained that discussions dealt with various issues and expressed his hope that the Association agreement between Lebanon and the EU will be signed very soon.
