Opposition parties urge government to present new electoral law
Morocco, Politics, 7/23/2001

Three Moroccan opposition parties have urged the government to present the soonest possible the new electoral law and to make public the electoral warding in the prospect of the coming legislative elections slated for 2002.

The three parties, the national democrat party (PND), the popular movement (MP) and the constitutional union (UC), which are forming the Wifaq (Arabic word for entente), insisted on the respect of the elections scheduled date, said a statement released at the end of a meeting of these parties' leaders.

The Wifaq parties also expressed disappointment at the call by the parties forming the coalition government for a possible delaying of the elections date and voiced amazement that some stands are in favor of the postponement of the elections. These stands are not based on any valid constitutional reason and are only dictated by subjective considerations, the parties said, denouncing the government for harming the elections periodicity principle.

They equally called the government to respond to the requests they had submitted for a meeting of the national commission supervising the elections.

Regarding the country's territorial integrity, the Wifaq parties deem it most necessary to show vigilance and prudence vis-a-vis the maneuvers hatched by the enemies of Morocco's integrity and to devise new mechanisms for political and diplomatic action. They hailed the sound royal initiatives in this respect and said the current stage constitutes the beginning of a promising process meant to consolidate Morocco's right, a fact requiring further efforts to consecrate democracy, consolidate devolution, push further the regionalization experience and promote the human element.

They also dealt with the economic and social problems facing the country, denouncing the government's lethargy in coping with the situation and finding adequate solutions.
