Ebeid affirms Egypt's interest in strenghening ties with China
Egypt-China, Politics, 7/21/2001

Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Ebeid said that Egypt is always keen on enhancing and expanding its deep and historical relationship with China in all fields and to wider horizon.

"We view China as our friend, a major power, a friend of developing countries, a state that has set a successful example for development," he said at a meeting with Chinese News Agency Xinhua President Tian Comgming Wednesday night.

"We in Egypt stand on the threshold of a modernization program for all our institutions," he noted, calling on China to cooperate with Egypt, through direct investment, participation in joint projects or merging Egyptian and Chinese companies in the different domains.

He proposed the formation of Egyptian-Chinese committees to meet, examine issues of mutual concern and set spheres for active cooperation to push the relationship ahead in the nearest possible future.

The Xinhua President is also a member of the Chinese Council of Ministers. Touching on the different domains for cooperation, Ebeid cited tourism, contracting and construction.

"President Hosni Mubarak has instructed the government to promote Egyptian-Chinese cooperation without any limits or restrictions," he said.

Ebeid asked for China's expertise in how to deal with export development and how to tap the American and European markets.

"Other fields China could offer its expertise in are the problems of poverty, education systems, overpopulation and the recycling of agricultural wastes," he said.

The Chinese official, on his part, said he would raise these matters to the Chinese Prime Minister.

He said he was happy to hear from the prime minister Egypt's keenest to achieve economic development and that he could see this time, five years after his last visit to Egypt all these positive and major achievements.
