Al-Bashir: Egypt approximated viewpoints to shove Sudanese problem
Sudan-Egypt, Politics, 7/21/2001

Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir praised the joint Egyptian-Libyan initiative that contributed to approximating the viewpoints to solve the Sudanese problem.

In an interview with "Akhbar El-Youm", President El-Bashir said that he expects that a conference for reconciliation and national accord would be convened during three weeks at the latest.

Excerpts:

Egypt has contributed to a great extent in changing the US stance towards the Sudan, especially after the new Bush administration tookkover.

A joint Egyptian-Sudanese committee is currently setting up a new agreement for granting Entry Visas.

An agreement is underway to open new Egyptian consulates in many Sudanese cities.

Sheikh Hassan El-Torabi could be released if he changed his mind in respect of the agreement concluded between him and John Garang.

The Egyptian-Libyan initiative has surprised the observers, due to the great confidence in the two sponsors, namely Egypt under President Mubarak, and Libya under President Gaddafi.

We are ready to enter into the negotiating table any time. This spirit has helped the two sponsoring states to avoid a lot of procedures, without the need to a preliminary session for the reconciliation conference.

The significance of the joint initiative lies in the understanding and agreement on political issues.

If reconciliation was attained in full, all political detainees will be released, in the same pattern as the civilized countries.
