Morocco-Lebanon, Culture, 7/21/2001
Morocco's Princess Lalla Meryem, sister of King Mohammed VI, said in an interview with two Lebanese papers, her priorities as chairwoman of the National Observatory of Children rights are multiple and part of a strategy to improve children living conditions.
My priorities are multiple and are all part of a general strategy meant to improve living conditions of Moroccan children, particularly poorest ones, said the princess who paid this week a four-day visit to Lebanon at the invitation of Lebanese first lady, Mrs Andree Lahoud. The interview is published by "La Revue du Liban et de l'Orient Arabe," "Monday Morning" and "Al Hawadith."
She also underscored how she is endeavoring to include in her action children who suffer anywhere, whether in Palestine, Iraq or Kosovo, explaining that the Observatory priorities are in tune with the instructions of King Mohammed VI. She added that the institution assesses and follows up Morocco's policy for children whose promotion has become a national priority.
Asked on the children parliament, chaired by princess Lalla Meryem, she said the parliament is an education structure and a space for debates. This year's activities included the holding of workshops in which children assessed their situation, voiced their expectations and traced actions needed at the legislative scale, she further explained.
Regarding the situation of Moroccan women, princess Lalla Meryem said women promotion is one of top concerns for the king who is endeavoring to reduce economic and legal inequalities. The princess, who chairs the social works of the royal armed forces, said she tries to listen to the army staff families grievances, find solutions or direct them to competent authorities.
To another question on whether Morocco experiences any racism or extremism problems, the princess said Morocco's political institution, its endeavors to consolidate the democracy practice with the participation of all its active components are shielding the kingdom against any deviation.
