Israeli army in the Golan in a state of alert

The BBC said on Friday that the Israeli army put its forces in the occupied Syrian Golan heights in a state of continued alert, " expecting a possible Syrian attack."

The radio quoted the Israeli army General Shawki Sharon said that the Syrian forces which face the eastern northern borders constitute a danger to the existence of Israel.

The radio asked the Syrian military writer Bassam al-Asali on whether, from the Syrian perspective, there is a possibility for the eruption of war between Syria and Israel and he replied by saying:"It is not convenient to ignore the statements made by Sharon to escalate the war, but it is convenient to place these threats into its general international frame because it is not possible that he will launch a war without an American consent and umbrella, and it is not possible that the US will agree on that amid the current conditions.

Concerning the Israeli statements that Syria is considered as a strategic threat for the existence of Israel, al-Asali said that the Israeli statements in this respects are just papers of claims and allegations, noting that the wars launched by Israel including its war against the Intifada came within this framework and launched under security pretexts. He explained that Israel starts the way and threatens the security of others, while its security will not be threatened without the challenges imposed by the Israeli Zionists against other countries.

Al-Asali concluded as saying that any war to be launched in the Golan will explode the region as a whole and draws the American umbrella from over Sharon and from under his feet, especially America which protects him from being tried as a war criminal might find its interests endangered if the Arab collective guarantee charter will be put into actual implementation.
