Morocco-Tunisia : a shared will to develop cooperation
Morocco-Tunisia, Politics, 7/20/2001

Morocco and Tunisia on Thursday renewed their shared will to develop their cooperation to hoist it the level of the mature political ties that have always bound Rabat and Tunis.

Such a will was expressed in a final joint communique made public Thursday at the end of an official visit President Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia paid to Morocco July 18-19 at the invitation of King Mohammed VI.

The two sides lauded the initiatives already made to translate into reality their bilateral accords and vowed to eradicate administrative obstacles hampering fluid trade exchanges.

Rabat and Tunis urged Moroccan and Tunisian economic operators to benefit from a bilateral free trade accord, concluded between the two Maghreban states in 1999.

According to the Communique, talks between King Mohammed VI and President Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali showed a concordance of views on the various Arab, Islamic, regional and international issues of common concern.

Regarding the Maghreb, Morocco and Tunisia renewed their call to continue efforts meant to boost the institutions of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), a regional grouping set up in 1989 by Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania.

The two states likewise renewed backing to the rights of Libya and called for lifting the embargo imposed on the Jamahirya, which lived up to all commitments related to the Lockerbie issue.
