Egypt, History, 7/19/2001
"Alexandria archaeological mission at Mariout isle unearthed Roman bathrooms, residential buildings and quays of a harbour located north of the isle," said archaeologist Adly Rushdie, Alexandria Antiquities Area Director.
"The mission also unearthed walls and fences of building that extend to long distances and hills for pottery affirming existence of Egyptian local pottery factories in this area," he said.
Muhammad Abdul-Maqsoud, Director of the Upper Egypt Antiquities Department, said that Mariout isle had witnessed an urban, industrial and cultural upsurge during the Pharaonic and Greco - Roman eras.
"The isle was the link between the Delta provinces in Egypt and the northwestern coast on the one hand and Mediterranean and south European countries on the other," he added.
