Morocco, Tunisia renew backing to Palestinian people
Morocco-Tunisia, Politics, 7/19/2001

Morocco and Tunisia on Wednesday renewed "infallible" backing to the Palestinian people in its struggle against the Israeli occupation.

"Our efforts have always been geared essentially towards encouraging initiatives aimed at establishing a fair and lasting peace in the Middle-East region," King Mohammed VI in an exchange of speeches during a dinner banquet he hosted at the Tangiers Royal Palace in honor of visiting President Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali.

The king renewed "full backing to the brotherly Palestinian people and to its national authority in their struggle for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds as its capital."

The king, who chairs the AL-Quds Committee (a body of the Organization of Islamic Conference striving for the defense of the holy city against judaization attemts), deemed the city "a corner stone in any fair and lasting settlement."

He called on the international community, especially the sponsors of the Middle-East peace process, to double efforts with a view to resuming the process and avoiding a fall that may plunge the region in tension and instability."

For his part, the Tunisian President warned that the peace process is going through the most difficult stage in view of the alarming situation in which the Palestinian people live, as well as the oppression actions that risk to throw the region in a spiral of violence.

He called on the United States and the European Union as well as on all influential powers to guarantee the necessary protection to the Palestinian people.

King Mohammed VI also touched on the situation in Iraq. "Our belonging to the Arab and African world requires us to show solidarity for lifting the embargo imposed on the brotherly Iraq and the respect of its sovereignty and the unity of its territories, while reaffirming our attachment to the security of Kuwait and its independence as well as the security of all the brotherly Arab countries in the Gulf," he said.
