On the first anniversary of President al-Assad in power
Syria, Politics, 7/19/2001

The London- based al-Hayat daily has stated that the first anniversary marking President Bashar al-Assad in power in Syria has passed with the minimum rate of celebration, noting that this is in the context of reinforcing a new image for Syria but " without pictures" (pictures for Presidents ).

In its Wednesday's issue, the paper added that the number of pictures for the president has been decreased in the streets and in the cities as well as on the private and public cars, while pictures and light were not hung on the fronts of official and state buildings as the it used to be.

The paper indicated that the Syrian cabinet has recently prevented the printing of President al-Assad's pictures and asked for adopting only one official picture for the President circulated in a limited number, usually hung in official offices beside the picture of the late President Hafez al-Assad.
