Sudan, Politics, 7/17/2001
"Recent proposals of the Egyptian-Libyan initiative on Sudan is the last-ditch bid to solve the Sudanese problem," said Mahmoud Othman Al-Merghani, Leader of the Sudanese Opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
He added that if this initiative does not reach tangible outcome, nobody could tell what would happen in Sudan, particularly with the current international pressures.
In a meeting with members of the Wadi El-Nil Family in Cairo Sunday, Merghani said that the initiative and its recent proposals created a new reality in Sudan, expressing hope that an overall political solution is reached to end the war.
On news reports about a summit grouping him, President Hosni Mubarak and Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, Merghani voiced readiness for this meting at any time.
He pointed out that the matter is now up to Egypt and the joint initiative committee, referring to the possibility of inviting Saudi Arabia to this summit.
Merghani commended the efforts exerted by Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher and Libyan Secretary of the People's Committee for African Unity with their opposite numbers in African countries neighbouring Sudan on the sidelines of the recent African summit in Lusaka.
