Mubarak apprises Peres of Egypt's rejection of Israeli practices
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 7/16/2001
Egyptian President Hosni Mubark strongly voiced Egypt's rejection to Israeli provocative practices against the Palestinian people and called on Israel to implement the Mitchell recommendations without any change.
This came during the meeting held between the President and the Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres who was on a short visit to Egypt Sunday.
Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said after the meeting that the Israeli stance is still evasive and equivocal and its practices continue whether those of maintaining the siege, destroying houses, displacing people or intentionally murdering individuals.
"All these matters do not fall within the context of confidence building or the good intentions that Israel is talking about," he noted, adding that the Palestinian people are thoes that have lost the confidence.
"President Mubarak stressed this during the meeting," he said, adding that Israel has to stop such practices and start working on the implementation of the Mitchell report.
He described the Mitchell report as a map to lead to the final-status talks.
Answering a query on whether Peres has offered new ideas, Maher said, "The aim of the meeting was to convey Egypt's position to Peres very clearly. We are not in need to hear what they (Israelis) have previously said. Peres has repeatedly spoken of the genuine intentions, we have heard them before. What is important is that he hears the Egyptian position and what Israel must do to reach the implementation of the Mitchell report and the final status talks."
