Egyptian fatwa forbids curing with Quran
Regional, Religion, 7/16/2001
Head of the fatwa (religious opinion) committee at al-Azhar mosque of Egypt, Sheikh Ali Abu Al-Hassan has rejected the idea of using the Quran (Islam's holy book) in witch crafting of soaking written holy verses in water or burning them to be used as a treatment for patients.
The Sheikh told Kuwaiti news agency KUNA the Quran is used to purify the souls, seeking God's help in curing sickness. He added some people who claim curing organic diseases aim at distracting people from obtaining professional help.
He described these people as "criminals and sinners." it is "an unacceptable and irrational belief to accept curing real organic illnesses by phrases used by tongue or a paper tied around the wound," he stressed.
"I wonder how people's ignorance of religion is used, where people use written verses then melt them in water and ordered to be drunk by the patients," he added.
The Sheikh pointed out that "such imposters are wrongly using the holy Quran to make an indecent living in ways rejected by the sane mind and pure heart in addition to diverging the holy Quran from its real mission of purifying hearts and souls."
Abu Al-Hassan added that this kind of witch crafting aims at the distortion of Islam and Muslims' image in the world.
He explained that the holy Quran is a way of living and a cure of the heart and soul from doubt, hate, selfishness, hypocrisy and adulation adding that it can be used in praying God for help and cure.
He added that Prophet Mohamed directed patients to doctors, telling the nation that physical illness is for professional people who are able to prescribe proper medications.
