Syrian drinking waters to Jordan
Syria-Jordan, Politics, 7/16/2001
At Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's directives, Syria on Saturday provided Jordan with drinking waters at a daily rate of 33 thousand cubic meters from Bassel al-Assad Dam in the province of Daraa to the south part of Syria.
The process of turning on of the waters at al-Yarmouk valley to Jordan was made in the presence of the Syrian deputy minister of irrigation Barakat Hadid and the secretary general of the Jordan valley authority Zafer al-Alem. The aim behind this water aid is to help to relieve the people of Jordan of the shortage of drinking waters especially in the capital, Amman.
In a statement to SANA's correspondent in Daraa, the Syrian deputy minister of irrigation said the total amount of waters to be provided to Jordan will be two million cubic meters provided over two months.
He added that this amount, though limited means a lot and has positive implications on the fruitful and continued cooperation between Syria and Jordan in all areas.
The Jordanian official, for his part expressed thanks to Syria's President and the government for the initiative. He said that the course of the waters will pass through al-Yarmouk river to King Abdullah Canal and then to the pumping station in Zima area and from there to be transferred to Amman to help in eliminating the current water shortage.
