Mubarak confers with Russian envoy

President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt on Sunday in Cairo met with the Russian special envoy for the ME peace process Andrea Vodvin and discussed with him the deteriorated conditions in the Middle East and the stalemate the ME peace suffers in the region at the meantime, on all tracks as a result of the continued Israeli escalation against the Palestinians and its threats against Syria and Lebanon.
During the meeting which was attended by the foreign minister Ahmad Maher and the Egyptian President political advisor Osama al-Baz discussions centered on the possibility of revitalizing the Russian role in the Middle East so as to establish a just and comprehensive peace in the region based on International Legitimacy resolutions and the land for peace formula.
In statements following the meeting, the Russian envoy condemned the Israeli aggressions against the unarmed Palestinian people and the Israeli threats against Syria and Lebanon. And held Israel responsible for the escalated conditions in the Middle East region.
The Russian envoy stressed his country's commitment to reaching a just and comprehensive peace in the region, stressing the need that any solution should be based on international legitimacy resolutions especially UN resolution 242 and 338, Madrid terms of reference and the land for peace formula, stressing that partial solutions are futile.
The Russian envoy stressed the importance of having a mechanism to move from the current tense conditions in the region to solid solutions for the cause of peace in the Middle East.
The Russian envoy said that the American role in the ME peace process is needed and necessary, yet not enough. He underlined the importance of having other roles besides the role of the US, which are the Russian and the European roles as well as the Syrian and Egyptian efforts and other regional roles in the Middle East.
