Assassination policy is misleading
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 7/14/2001
In an interview with Al-Ahram, Osama El-Baz, Political Advisor of President Mubarak, asserted that the visit of Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres to Cairo tomorrow comes within the framework of exploring the true intentions of Israeli government, and its readiness to carry out the Mitchell recommendations, and the next steps to build confidence and restart negotiations. Excerpts:
*In principle, we do not refuse to listen to Israel's ideas, and realize the true intentions of Israeli government.
*The Palestinians themselves do the same thing.
*We're interested to know to what extent Israel is prepared to maintain cease-fire, with the aim of carrying out the recommendations of Mitchell Committee.
*Israel spreads these ideas in international quarters, but more important is to see tangible results on the ground.
*In this connection, Egypt is intent on exploring the real nature of Israeli stances, in order to define its own reaction.
*It is presumed that Peres has new ideas that he wants to notify Egypt, in respect of the points of difference that prevent stability in Palestinian territories, and in Israel itself.
*We strongly denounce the assassination policy adopted by Israel's Prime Minister against the elements of Palestinian Intifada.
*Such acts are absolutely rejected, and considered a form of terrorism.
*No state or official body should get involved in assassination acts.
*Israel would be mistaken if it ever thought that such acts could lead to any positive results.
*It cannot frighten the Palestinian people, especially that the Palestinian people, including women and children, has already proved that they donot fear Israel.
*In reply to a query about a probabale Israeli paln to wage war against Syria in the light of Israeli acts of escalation against Lebanon, Dr. El Baz ruled out this possibility.
*However, Israel would commit a grave mistake if it ever considered any military operations against Syria.
Syria wouldn't be alone if it becomes subject to any aggression.
