Egypt calls for activating UN role to settle dispute in Somalia
Egypt-Somalia, Politics, 7/14/2001
Egypt called for activating political efforts exerted by the United Nations (UN) to settle the dispute in Somalia and end the 10-year-old crisis.
Ambassador Ahmad Abul-Gheit, Egypt's Chief Delegate to the UN, said Somalia should not be marginalized in the international organization's bid to bring about peace in the whole of Africa.
The international organization shoulders responsibility towards Somalia just like any other unrest-stricken areas to which the UN rushed to help like Kosovo and East Timor, said Abul-Gheit in statements following the Security Council discussions on Somalia Thursday.
Abul-Gheit called for accelerating enforcement of the previously-floated ideas on setting up a peace bureau in Mogadishu to add more legitimacy to the national transitional government spearheaded by Abdilqassem Salah and also to encourage the Somali factions to enter into a serious and constructive political dialogue with the government.
The Security Council expressed concern in its discussions over the situation in Somalia and the ongoing predicament of the Somali people due to the civil disputes.
