People's Assembly stresses Arabs' adherence to just, comprehensive peace
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 7/14/2001
The Egyptian People's Assembly stressed the Arabs' adherence to realizing a just and comprehensive peace in the Mideast region based on Israel's implementation of the international legitimacy resolutions, enabling Palestinians to return to their homeland and establish their independent state.
In speech delivered on Thursday before the 39th session of the Arab Parliamentary Union (APU), convened in Sanaa, Egyptian parliamentarian Ahmed Raslan urged support for the special international program for the social, economic and cultural development in the Palestinian territories as well as extending assistance to the Palestinian people to rebuild their national economy.
Raslan also called on the Arab leaders and governments to continue their efforts to form an international committee to investigate the massacres committed by Israel against the Palestinians as well as the UN Security Council to formulate an international criminal court to try Israeli war criminals.
The Egyptian parliamentarian also called for releasing Palestinian detainees held in Israeli jails as well as stopping the Israeli demolition of Palestinian houses and farms.
He also highlighted the necessity of accelerating assistance to Jerusalem's Beit El-Mal (Islamic Treasury) Agency and the Al-Quds Fund, in addition to intensifying media campaigns unmasking Israeli violations of human rights.
Meanwhile, the Arab Parliamentary Union (APU) has affirmed, during its extraordinary session the need for greater material and financial support of the Palestinian Intifada.
Arab League Assistant Secretary-General for Palestine Affairs Ambassador Sa'eed Kamal told Sawt Al Arab Radio Thursday that Arab Parliamentarians were considering two proposals to this effect.
Kamal, who spoke over the telephone from Sanaa, said the first proposal calls for creating joint mechanisms with the pro-Israel US Congress and underlines the need for investing US interests in the region in a way that serves Arab causes with emphasis on the Palestinian people's rights.
The second proposal, he said, calls for setting up Parliamentary committees throughout the Arab World to prop up support for the Palestinian Intifada.
