A fire converts Deir Ezz Zour cotton into ashes
Syria, Local, 7/12/2001

Piles of cotton at Deir Ezz Zour ( a Syrian province in the northern part of the country) spinning factory was exposed to a large fire on Tuesday and large material losses estimated at 50 million Syria pounds ( 1.1 million USD) are expected to be lost.

Sides concerned in the province said that reasons behind the fire are still unknown and might be a result of a cigarette thrown by one of the passerby smokers as the piles were arranged on the Deir Ezz Zour Aleppo road and close to residential aggregation in al-Thawra quarters.

The sources indicated that the fire burnt 23-26 piles of the collected cotton. The fire fighting and civil defense cars could not extinguish the fire until supported by the fire fighting means from other neighboring provinces from Aleppo, al-Raqqa and al-Hassaka.

Worthy mentioning this is not the first fire to take place, regardless to its volume and the inflicted losses and some are questioning until when will such strategic products for the Syrian economy will be vulnerable to such catastrophic incidents.
