UN report highlights remarkable progress of human development in Egypt
Egypt, Culture, 7/11/2001

Egyptian Ambassador to the United Nations Ahmed Abdul Gheit said the United Nations human development report, to be issued on Tuesday, showed remarkable progress of the human development indices in Egypt.

Egypt, he specified, made progress in the indices of human development, eliminating poverty, development of both man and woman and women empowerment in decision-making.

"The progress Egypt achieved in its indices is considered an evidence for the success of the efforts exerted by the government to raise standards of living and realize human development in its wide sense to run parallel with economic rates," he said.

Meantime, Abul Gheit said that the situation in Egypt regarding the trade of small and light arms is stable thanks to the country's legislations.

Addressing a UN conference on the illicit small arms trade, Abul Gheit said this illicit trade had a negative impact on severa1 world countries, urging an integrated approach in handling the issue.

The chief delegate lauded the November 2000 Bamako declaration on small and light arms issued by an African ministerial meeting.

Abul Gheit said combating this illicit trade should come within an international framework, referring to the final communique of the first UN General Assembly session on disarmament in 1978.

He also called upon manufacturing countries to set up a monitoring system that would guarantee restrictions on the sale and disposal of small and light arms.
