Sharon plans a military strike against Syria
Syria-Israel, Politics, 7/10/2001

The chairman of the Palestinian national council Salim al-Zanoun told the United Arab Emirates UAE daily al-Khaleij that the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon is currently planning to direct a military blow to Syria, noting that Damascus believes that the American pressures have so far prevented Arafat's visit to Damascus.

Al-Zanoun added that Sharon's priorities now are to strike Syria in order to force her to accept the Sykes -Picot borders for 1923 with the aim to complete closing the cycle of borders on the occupied Palestinian territories for 1967.

On Arafat's suspended visit to Damascus, al-Zanoun said:" During my recent visit to Syria I found all the leaderships ( the Palestinian leaderships) there are so keen for this visit in order to resume the Palestinian- Syrian coordination. But I heard from them their belief that Arafat is the one who does not want to visit Damascus now because of the American pressure."

Al-Zanoun continued:" my answer to that if Arafat would have asked you to go out of Palestine in this phase to visit you, your answer should be to recommend him not to do so because Sharon wants to alienate Arafat from the Palestinian territories and to prevent him from returning back to it."
