Egypt, Sudan ensure continuity of cooperation, integration
Sudan-Egypt, Politics, 7/9/2001

Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Ebeid and Sudanese First Vice President Ali Othman Taha have assured the continuity of future cooperation between Egypt and Sudan in all domains.

In a press conference held at the close of the Egyptian -Sudanese higher committee meetings in Khartoum, they said the two states would set a functional mechanism to implement the 20 agreements and protocols signed to swap benefits fairly.

Ebeid said Egypt is ready to implement Sudanese development and infrastructure programs at a lower cost than offered by other quarters.

"Egypt is convinced that any good realized on the Sudanese territories will return squarely on the northern valley," he said.

Ebeid reaffirmed that Egypt would continue to support Sudan in solving its problems and strengthening its economy.

"Egypt is optimistic about achieving peace and stability," he said, indicating that lessons from history proved that war was counterproductive, while peace bore fruit for all in terms of security, progress and a better future for everybody, he added.

"The stability and territorial integrity of Sudan should reflect positively on the north of the Nile Valley "he said.

Taha, on his part, said the political attitude is pushing forward towards economic integration for facing international economic blocs.

Answering a query on the issue of Egyptian property in Sudan, Taha said pending problems between the two sides will be solved.

"The two sides agreed to begin building a set of vital industries, including serums, construction materials and boosting cooperation between the private sector in the two countries," Ebeid said.

Ebeid and Taha witnessed the signing ceremony of 20 agreements, protocols, and cooperation programmes at the end of the higher committee meetings.

The agreements include cooperation in the fields of agriculture, customs, land and maritime transport, industry and investment.

The cooperation agreements comprise the executive programmes for promoting cooperation in the field of agricultural research, animal wealth, electricity, education and scientific research.

Addressing the opening session of the committee meeting, Ebeid renewed Egypt's readiness to increase the volume of trade exchange, investments as well as joint ventures between the two countries.

He also voiced his country's support for Sudan in its quest to realise peace, stability and economic development.

Taha, on his part, lauded the role played by Egypt in backing Arab causes, praising the strong and deeply rooted relations binding the two states.
