Mrs. Mubarak opens 3rd women's intellectual forum
Egypt, Culture, 7/9/2001

Egyptian First Lady Suzanne Mubarak, who chairs the National Women's Council, said that the issue of women and the labor market is not only a technical question but is related to the status of women and their role in the society and the extent of benefiting from the skills of half the population.

Addressing the inaugural meeting of the one-day Third Women's Intellectual Forum of the National Women's Council which was held Sunday under the title "Woman and the labour Market" (official and non-official sector), Mrs. Mubarak said the forum discusses one of the most important feminist issues, namely women and the labour market.

Reviewing the activities of the National Women's Council since it held its first congress in March 2000 with President Hosni Mubarak attending, Mrs. Mubarak said that the Council has been a basic partner in national dialogue on the future. Mrs. Mubarak said the forum on women and the labour market draws its importance from three considerations:

1-Women are an active element and basic partner in overall and sustained development.

2- The forum focuses on issues related to women's participation in the official and unofficial labour market. Hence, it discusses issues related to women's participation in the sectors of production and the various services.

3- Focus is made on women's economic participation. Women are the nucleus of the family, an active element in the cultural life and a partner in economic development.

Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak said that turning to market economy and the private sector, there should be one wage for the same work and women should have the right to participate in all economic spheres so long as they have the ability and the skill.
