Moussa's project to develop the Arab League
Regional, Politics, 7/9/2001

The project set by the secretary general of the Arab League (AL) Amr Moussa for structural development for the AL includes two trends. The first includes certain thoughts which can be immediately implemented and other thoughts need the consent of the Arab summit due to be held in Beirut in 2001.

Among the debated ideas is the foundation of the post of the deputy secretary general of the AL, a committee including prominent Arab figures in joint Arab work to carry out mediation efforts in case differences erupted among the Arab states.

The assistants for the AL secretary general say that he intends to officially declare all these details within the few coming hours.

Moussa had chaired over the meetings of the higher committee for coordination among Arab federations and organizations with the participation of the permanent representatives of the Arab states. He left this meeting open for further consultation and coordination to develop all institutions of the Arab League.

Moussa seeks to give an advanced electronic touch on all activities of the AL ( to be through computers ), the use of the Internet and inaugurating of quick correspondent especially the e-mail among the various departments of the AL.

Moussa also intends to pursue the same policy pursued by the UN secretary general Kofi Annan. He will appoint general commissioners for certain files, especially for certain periods of time according to reforms given by the work charter of the AL of 1945.
