Sudanese forces deter an attack by rebels
Sudan, Politics, 7/9/2001
The spokesman for the Sudanese army Lt. Gen. Muhammad Bashir Suleiman has stressed that the Sudanese government forces deterred an attack by the southern Sudan rebels in a place which is not far from the main oil area in the southern part of the country.
In a statement, the spokesman added the attack was aiming at occupying the roads linking between the area situated to the west of al-Nweir in the area situated between Upper Nile and al-Wahda states. He explained that the government's forces inflicted on the rebels heavy losses in properties.
He stressed that the situation in the area exposed to the attack is completely stable, noting that the rebels seek to violate the process of peace and reconciliation that emerged from the acceptance of the Egyptian- Libyan peace initiative by both the Sudanese government and opposition.
