Chephren pyramid opens for visitors
Egypt, Local, 7/7/2001

The pyramid of King Chephren will open for visitors as of Sunday after a two-year closure period due to the increasing humidity that reached 80% for the influx of visitors inside the pyramid.

Gaballah Ali Gaballah, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), said the closure of the pyramid fell within the plan approved by Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni which aims at maintaining tourism as a source of national income.

On the other hand, Giza Antiquities Director Zahi Hawwas said three tombs will also open for tourist visits.

The tombs, located in the Western cemetery of Cheops Pyramid, are of Dua-en Ra, son of Ring Chephren and Vizier of King Mycerinus, (the era of the 4th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom), the tomb of Emir, the priest of King Cheops and the administrative supervisor of the royal palace (the 5th Dynasty) and the tomb of Nefer-Pao Ptah, the supervisor of the royal property (the 5th Dynasty), he said.
