Cairo, Khartoum resume works of the joint committee tomorrow
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 7/6/2001
In a measure reflecting the notable political rapprochement between Cairo and Khartoum after a phase of tension lasted almost five years between the two states, meetings of the first session of the Sudanese- Egyptian joint higher committee will be resumed tomorrow under the chairmanship of the Egyptian prime minister Atif Obeid and the first deputy for the Sudanese President Ali Othman Taha.
The Egyptian minister of planning and international cooperation Ahmad al-Dursh described the beginning of the works of the joint committee as a positive move by the two sides in order to effectively revitalize bilateral relations in the context of what was agreed upon by Presidents Mubarak and al-Bashir during their recent meeting in Cairo, noting that the chairmanship of the committee was raised from the level of the two states' foreign ministers to the level of the prime minister in Cairo and the first vice President in Khartoum, especially that meetings of the committee come at a very important timing which is the consent of the Sudanese government on the consensus the Libyan- Egyptian initiative attained to achieve national reconciliation in Sudan.
The Sudanese minister said that the committee will review means of supporting and developing relations between the two states in all means especially means of increasing the volume of commercial exchange which witnesses successive developments during the past three years after meat coming from Egypt to Sudan replaced the European meats.
