Morocco-European Union, Politics, 7/5/2001
The European Union backs the resolution adopted last week by the United Nations Security Council, providing for a political solution to the Sahara issue, said the European Union high representative for foreign policy and common security, Javier Solana.
Solana told Moroccan TV channel "2M" the EU has supported efforts by the world body secretary general and his personal envoy and, therefore, we back the UN Security Council resolution for a political settlement of the Sahara.
Solana who was received by prince Moulay Rachid, the prime minister and foreign affairs and cooperation, said talks were positive and constructive. He stressed Morocco, owing to its stability and prosperity, is a priority for the EU. Of difficulties encountered in negotiating the agricultural component of the association agreement, Solana said the two sides need to resume negotiations in the coming days and voiced optimism over prospects of overcoming difficulties in agriculture and fisheries.
