Hamas: Ghoushe still enjoys his position in the movement
Jordan, Politics, 7/4/2001

The family of Ibrahim Ghoushe who returned back to Jordan on Saturday after he was evacuated from it in 1999, after he had declared freezing all sorts of activities inside the Islamic resistance movement ( Hamas) has stressed he will make no statements to the mass media.

His son, Omar Ghoushe told reporters on Sunday:" My father will make no statements to the mass media, nor accept to be pictured and this is part of the commitment by his side to the reached agreement," with the Jordanian government which resulted in permitting him to return back to Jordan.

In a hand- written message, Ghoushe ( 65 year old), an engineer carrying the Jordanian nationality, vowed last Thursday to " freeze" his " political, media and organizational activities relating to the Hamas Movement which is considered illegal in Jordan." Following that the government permitted him to return back to Jordan from where he was deported in November 1999 to Qatar together with three other leaders of the Hamas movement also carrying the Jordanian nationality, after they were accussed of carrying out activities that violate stability as well as of being members in an non- Jordanian and illegal organization.

On June 14 Ghoushe surprisingly returned back from Doha to Amman on board of a Qatari plane and the Jordanian authorities did not permit him to enter the country and he was kept at Amman's airport.

After he announced freezing of his activities inside the Hamas movement, Ghoushe left Amman on Wednesday night for Bancock before he has returned back on Saturday at dawn to Amman.

Replying to a question on whether Ghoushe vowed to freeze all his activities inside Hamas only on the Jordanian territories, his son said:" This is what is understood from the agreement," between him and the Jordanian government.

On Sunday the Jordanian government issued a press statement which read:" commenting on the return of engineer Ibrahim Ghoushe to his country Jordan, safely and solving the crisis of expelling and detaining him, a process made at direct contacts between the Jordanian authorities and the movement, and despite of our reservations on the unjustified way by which Ghoushe was sent to Bancock and then returned back to Jordan, a gesture which was a violation to the agreement signed between the Jordanian authorities and the movement, the political bureau of the Hamas Movement stresses the following: First: The return back of engineer Ghoushe to his country Jordan furnishes for a complete solution for the file of the crisis, that will be hopefully very close, in line with the constitution, the law and the right to citizenship, as well as the requirements of uniting Arab and Muslim ranks in confrontation of the Zionist enemy whose leader, Sharon is launching a fierce war against our Palestinian people."

"Secondly: Engineer Ibrahim Ghoushe is still in his position in the movement, a member in its political bureau. His suspension to carry out activities in the name of the movement is limited only to the Jordanian arena."

"Thirdly: The Hamas movement political bureau extends thanks and appreciation to all the Palestinian and Jordanian people, their parties and national figures and trade unions for their solidarity with the movement and the question of its expelled members. The movemen's political bureau also extends greetings to the Arab official and popular leaderships whose efforts and generous mediation were exerted to settle this matter. Special thanks was made to the leaders of Yemen, Libya, Sudan and the secretary general of the Arab League, together with a very special thank to the state of Qatar- ruler, government and people- over hosting Ghoushe and his colleagues."
