Al-Riyadh handed over Baghdad the body of Iraqi soldier killed on the border
Saudi Arabia-Iraq, Politics, 7/4/2001

A Saudi official said on Sunday that al-Riyadh last Tuesday handed over Baghdad, through the International Committee of the Red Cross ICRC the body of an Iraqi soldier who was killed in " border fighting " between the two states by the end of May.

The Saudi assistant secretary for the foreign ministry for political affairs prince Turkey Bin Muhammad Bin Saud said that the Iraqi soldier who was named "Taqi Abdul Ameer Hussein " died because of the wounds he had suffered when Iraqi forces incurred into the Saudi territories at 400 meters on May 23.

Prince Turkey, who is also the official responsible for international organizations at the Saudi foreign ministry added that the " Iraqi soldiers opened fire on the Saudi borders guards inside the Saudi territories and the saudi forces retaliated the fire in self- defense. A matter which resulted in wounding the said soldier, while the other Iraqi soldiers fled into the Iraqi territories.

On June 5th, saudi Arabia notified the UN in a message about this incident, which Iraq had categorically denied.

The saudi official added that the Saudi border guards took the Iraqi soldier to al - Oweiqleyah hospital, near the area where the confrontation took place but he died because of his strong wounds despite the fact that all necessary medical aids were given to him.

Prince Turkey said that the ICRC had handed over the body of the killed Iraqi soldier to his country at the request of saudi Arabia, noting that the " body of the killed soldier was actually handed over on Tuesday."
