Sharon cancels visit to Brussels after Belgian attorney general studies the case against him
Israel-Belgium, Politics, 7/3/2001
The Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon has decided not to visit Belgium, on the ground that the Belgian law decided to release an order to arrest him for his involvement in the Sabra and Chatilla Palestinian massacres that took place in Lebanon.
The Israeli radio quoted an official at the court of Sharon as saying that the Belgian authorities had invitated Sharon to visit its territories earlier.
The Attorney general in Brussels approved on Sunday to study the case against Sharon for his involvement in Sabra and Shatilla crimes and over committing crimes against humanity.
Belgian judicial sources said that the investigation judge Demyan Vander Mershe will start investigations over the responsibility of Sharon for the massacres resulted in killing 1000 Palestinians.
Earlier in June wo other cases were filed before the Belgian courts of the same charge by Arab lawyers and a group of Belgian citizens.
Worthy mentioning that the cases against Sharo are based on the Belgian law issued in 1993 that give the Belgian courts an international authority to consider the claims concerning war crimes and the crimes against humanity in the world.
