US smart sanctions on Iraq fail to pass
Iraq, Politics, 7/3/2001

The US on Monday said it approves temporarily to postpone the sanctions against Iraq and to extend working with the "oil for food agreement" without any change.

The spokesman for the US state department Richard Boucher said in a press conference that members of the UN Security Council achieved some progress towards a new system that states to alleviate the restrictions on civilian commodities and goods and ruled out openly commodities of dual use ( can be used for military and civilian purposes.) The spokesman added tha it is clear that the pending disputes will not be settled as it is decided to end work today (Monday) working according to the "oil for food" program and " we have decided to join unanimously taken view," to extend working according to the UN resolution and therefore "we" will continue to work for getting the consent of Russia on the other conditions of the UN resolution.

Meantime, diplomats announced on Monday tha Britain has given up to propose any draft project to amend the UN sanctions law imposed on Iraq for voting upon at the UN Security Council today ( Tuesday).

The Diplomats said that Russia approved during the confrontations held on Monday morning to continue discussing the proposed amendments after the British representative at the UN Jeremy Greenstock said he was not provided by instructions to ask for voting to the said draft resolution immediately.
