Some 11 Yemenis killed in clashes between soldiers and tribal men

An official in Sanaa said on Saturday that some 11 persons were killed and 18 wounded on Friday evening in confrontation between military forces and tribal members in the province of Maareb to the east of Sanaa.

The Yemeni official added that the armed confronation which lasted for several hours, took place between tribal members and soldiers who were sent to Obeida area to arrest six members of one of the tribes suspected to have had on Thursday bombarded an oil pipeline in the said province.

Eye-witnesses explained that the explosion caused a big gap in the pipeline and this resulted in halting the pumping operation in "Safer " oil fields in the same area where the US oil company " Hunt Oil" is very active.

This oil pipelines which is 420 Km length, transports crude oil from the production fields in Maareb to Raas Issa port on the Red Sea and Yemen exports almost 160,000 barrels of oil per day through this port.

Worthy mentioning the confronation between the security forces and the armed members are numerous and very often bloody in this country which is of tribal structure, in which the Yemeni ministry of the Interior estimates number of weapons in the hands of civilians of moe than 60 million pieces, estimated at three pieces of weapons per each citizen.

The last confronation between the soldiers and the tribal men was officially declared on June 4th and resulted in killing three persons and wounding four in Sanaa.
