Nayouf is not a Syrian journalist
Syria, Politics, 6/30/2001

The Paris based weekly al-Muharrir news said in its Friday's recent issue that Nizar Nayouf is not a journalist and did not work in the press before and he was just a prisoner because he had made contacts with an Israeli paper in Cyprus.

The paper indicated Nayouf's contacts with that Israeli paper were many without any justification and that it was found out that the source of the pressure exerted in his case ( the Pope when he came to Syria asked for his case and also during President Bashar's visit to France one particular question was asked if Nayouf can leave the country and President al-Assad said yes he can), was the Zionist Lobby because he knew that the reason behind his detention, as well as certain information he gathered when he performed the military services which raised suspicion that he had contacts with the Israelis.

The paper continued that Nayouf who belongs to a Syrian communist organization is not a member in the Syrian Press association ( journalist Union) and has not been, at any time a correspondent for any paper, never worked in any news paper and only once published a small article in a Palestinian news bulletin issued in Damascus and therefore he is not a prisoner of the opinion.

Al-Muharrir news defied Nayouf and every one who defends him to refute these information or even to present Nayouf's vocational record as a journalist or articles he every published in the press.

The weekly also quoted a French journalist who followed up Nayouf's issue as saying that " Nayouf's case is a type of cases that are made abroad and then implied and invested politically."
