Moscow rejects the US- British proposal on sanctions on Iraq
Iraq-Russia, Politics, 6/29/2001

Moscow has renewed its position which supports Iraq on the British- American project concerning the sanctions on Iraq, and warning it will use the veto against this project if it will be submitted to the UN Security Council.

Russia's representative at the UN Sergey Lavrov said that it is impossible that the British- American project will be imposed and that his country will not permit this project to be enforced.

He explained in statements to journalists that this project will not alleviate the sanctions imposed on Iraq, rather will politicize the humanitarian program which backs Iraq and intensify the situation in the region and create new dangers.

For his part, the US acting representative at the UN James Kingham and the British representative at the UN Jeremy Greenstock said they will have discussion on the project with the aim of reaching an agreement by the fall of the set date to be debated at the UN Security Council on July 3rd.

On the other hand, the Russian president Vladimire Putin discussed the said proposal with the British prime minister Tony Blair, stressing Russia's opposition to these proposal.

Despite the Russian opposition, both Britain and the US stressed they will continue to discuss these proposals at the UN Security Council.

In the same framework, the chairman of the international cultural and scientific cooperation committee Yuri Shafrink denounced the American - British attempts to tighten sanctions against Iraq through the UN Security Council.

In a statement he made on Thursday, Shafrink said that the approval of the UN Security Council on the US- British proposal against Iraq will result in that the UN organization will loose its credibility and reputation. He unveiled the efforts made by his committee and other social organizations and Russian businessmen so as the Russian Duma council ( parliament) will take a position to prevent the approval of the decision approved by Britain and the US to impose what is called " smart sanctions" on Iraq.
