Syrian member of parliament calls for human rights
Syria, Politics, 6/28/2001

Member of the Syrian parliament Mamoun al-Homsi who is also a member at the Syrian- French- Friendship society has called for the formation of a human rights committee at the Syrian parliament. A matter which raised against him a wave of criticism from his colleagues who accused him of carrying " foreign attitude."

Homsi who cited the experience of the Lebanese parliament to this effect in having a similar committee that visits prisons and monitors events, considering that his request is within the context of the Syrian constitution.

Al-Homsi told reporters that his idea is based on supporting the efforts of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to maintaining reforms in that " bad acts can only be dealt with challenging it.," adding that Syria is in a drastic need to this because of the violations which are damaging to " the dignity of the citizen and his freedom.," noting that the west used this " to pressure " Syria.

Al-Homsi added that the Syrian parliament can put foundations for this committee in that it can include " all political parties and trends" the parliament comprises so as the parliament will stop just to be a mere observer in many " vital cases."

On the other hand, the Syrian security forces had permitted the Syrian human rights activist Nizar Nayouf to travel outside the country.

Hayan Nayouf, the brother of Nizar said that the security authorities in Lattakia ( the city of Nayouf) told his brother currently visiting Damascus for medical treatment that the specialized authorities permitted him to travel outside the country, adding that Nizar can ask for a passport like any ordinary citizen.
