Al-Assad concludes a successful visit to France

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday concluded his visit to France by a close door meeting with the French President Jacques Chirac during which they discussed results of the visit.
Earlier in the day, the president met with Arab ambassadors accredited in France and a delegation representing the Syrian community.
Before returning back home with his wife, al-Assad held a press conference in which he stressed that his visit to France was successful by " all means" and that there were agreement in the Syrian- French stances on most of the debated issues especially the need of abiding by the implementation of UN resolutions and the Madrid terms of reference concerning the peace process.
The President also talked about the Syrian- European partnership agreement and the current developments taking place in Syria and future investments.
The President stressed that the American move in the region has not started yet clearly and there is no actual participation from the new American administration in the peace process.
Al-Assad also stressed the principles of the ME peace process embodied in UN resolutions, the UN Security Council and the Madrid's terms of reference. The President commented that so far " the Israeli performance is inclined towards pushing the region towards war." Concerning settlement, the president said that the settlements are not accepted at the humanitarian level nor legally, noting that neither the international legitimacy nor any other legitimacy will accept that.
President al-Assad and his wife returned in Damascus on Wednesday evening following a state visit to France at the invitation of the French President Jacques Chirac. The visit which lasted for three days was very eventful and included talks between the President and each of the French President Jacques Chirac, the French prime minister Lionel Jospin, a meeting with a French businessmen delegation, a visit to the Paris municipality house, a visit to the French national society ( parliament) and a visit to the Arab Institute in Paris.
