Spanish premier: Moroccan-spanish relations affected by non-renewal of fisheries agreement
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 6/27/2001
Spanish prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar said relations with Morocco have been affected by difficulties in reaching a fisheries agreement between Morocco and the European Union.
The head of the Spanish government told the parliament's lower chamber despite efforts by Madrid, it was impossible to conclude an agreement that would enable Spanish fishermen and trawler owners to resume their activity in Moroccan waters.
He also voiced hope that bilateral relations will be privileged and based on mutual respect and common interests.
Meanwhile, Morocco's sea fisheries minister, Said Chbaatou, denied any secret negotiations with the European Union and recalled that Morocco has repeatedly expressed readiness to resume negotiations to reach an agreement.
The official was questioned by a member of the chamber of advisors (upper chamber of Moroccan parliament).
He added that the creation of joint ventures between the two countries should be made in the frame of existing fishing licenses, explaining that since 1992, Morocco has not delivered a single license.
