Mubarak on the wake of Powell's arrival in Egypt
Egypt-USA, Politics, 6/27/2001
President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt has announced just few hours before the arrival of the US secretary of state Colin Powell today in Alexandria marking the beginning of his tour on the region, that he ( Mubarak) refused demands ( set by certain sides) to pressure the Palestinians. He renewed his warning of the spread of " terrorism" in the region if the US will not interfere to maintain a settlement.
After inaugurating the Weraq bridge in Cairo, Mubarak said replying to a question on the aim of Powell's visit:" we have talks with them for several times and there should be an American movement. The US is the largest country in the world and it has to move towards this case because it has numerous interests in the region." The Egyptian President warned that the US interests " will be greatly affected if there will be no contribution to finding out a solution to the acts of violence which might be converted to terrorism and by that all of us will be affected. But we do not want to have steps back.."
As for the telephone call the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon made to him, Mubarak said:" The Palestinians wanted that. He phoned me. I did not phone any one and I hope this will be satisfactory for the public opinion." He stressed there will be no way but to join peace. The One who quits the peace process will come to an end."
