Arafat and Damascus' conditions
Palestine-Syria, Politics, 6/27/2001

A Palestinian official close to the Palestinian authority said in an exclusive statement to the Jordanian weekly al-Sabeel that the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat informed the Syrian leadership his rejection of Damascus's conditions and her demands that should be met if he desires to visit Damascus and to meet with the Syrian officials.

The Palestinian official added that Arafat wants also the final statement of the visit to voice support for the Jordanian- Egyptian initiative and to the report of the Mitchell committee. A thing which the Syrians refuse.

The Palestinian official added that this Syrian position means that the agreement on Arafat's agenda to President Bashar al-Assad has not been reached yet even under the American- Israeli pressure Arafat has been facing to force him to cancel his visit to Damascus and alienate from Syria, who ( Syria) seeks to maintain a coordination with the Palestinians concerning the peace process. And this is what both Israel and the US reject, but agreed upon with Arafat.
